Steel Fire Door FAQs

What’s the difference between a fire door and a fire exit?
A fire door is designed to hold back fire and smoke, usually internally, as part of compartmentalising a building. A fire exit door’s job is different – it’s the final door on an escape route, designed to let people out quickly and safely, and it’s not usually fire-rated in the way an internal fire door is. Our fire exit doors are built to prioritise that fast, unobstructed escape.

Does a fire exit door need to be fire rated?
Not necessarily. The final exit door leading outside is usually not a fire-rated door, whereas doors positioned along the escape route inside the building typically need to be certified fire doors as part of compartmentation. What every fire exit door does need, regardless of rating, is to open easily in the direction of escape and never be locked in a way that traps someone inside.

What are the requirements for a fire exit door?
It should open easily without a key from the inside, open in the direction of escape where possible, and never be obstructed. Most fire exit doors can be locked from the outside for security using some form of outer access device, but that lock is overridden the moment the internal panic hardware is pressed – which is exactly how the panic bar on our doors works.

Can a fire exit door be used as a normal entrance too?
Yes, and it’s common – many of our doors are configured with an external access device so authorised staff can use the same door for day-to-day entry, while the internal panic bar still guarantees anyone can get out immediately in an emergency, without a key or code.

How should a fire exit door be inspected and maintained?
I’d write this one carefully rather than guess at a specific inspection schedule or standard (that risks a compliance claim you’d need to back up) – better as a short, honest answer pointing to your existing servicing/maintenance service rather than stating specific intervals. Want me to draft it that way, or hold this one back?
